Mothers Day Weekend Connecticut Premier Hoops (PHD) 7th grade team coached by Drew Carothers participated in the Super 32 Tournament in Trumbull, CT
Saturday was their chance to qualify for the Championship to be played on Mothers Day. The first pool game was played against the West Hartford Magic. PHD played a high level of man to man defense capped off by Stephen Paolini and Josh Cappello taking the ball out of the Magics biggest offensive threat. In the second half PHD made a 15-0 run to seal the victory 64-36. In the remaining two pool games PHD beat their opponents by an average margin of 24, beating CT Elite (Trumbull, CT) and D Athleticz Club (Bridgeport, CT). PHD finished pool play with a 3-0 record earing a bid to the Championship.
In the Championship on Sunday, PHD was handed a rematch with the West Hartford Magic. The Magic came in with a different game plan and had a chip on their shoulder from pool play. In the first half the Magic were pounding the ball inside finishing around the basket. With 8 minutes remaining PHD swithced up their defensive scheme mixing in a full court press and half court trap which caught the Magic by surprise. PHD was able to finish the half on a 10-0 run winning 32-18. The bulk of the second half had the teams exchanging backets until the six minute mark where the Magic hit three unanwered three pointers cutting the lead to 8 points. On PHD’s next possession Gabe Andrews hit a key 3-pointer to put PHD back up 11. PHD switched back to a heavy half court trap and was able to go on another 10-0 run to put the game out of reach for the Magic. PHD won the Championship 60-43. This was their first Tournament Championship of the year. Colton NIchols finished with 10 points and 10 Rebs while Stephen Paolini had 17 points. Jack Therriault also finished with a double double, 10 points and 10 rebounds.
