Drew Carothers

Drew Carothers

Drew was a 3 sport athlete at Fairfield High School from his sophomore year on.  He was recruited by some Division 2 & 3 schools to play both baseball and basketball. In the fall of his senior year he was offered a scholarship to play baseball at Iona College , Division 1, as a pitcher.  At the age of 22 he started his coaching career as the assistant baseball coach at Greens Farms Academy and freshman basketball coach at Fairfield Prep. Drew is currently the Assistant Varsity Coach at Fairfield Warde High School. He has also coached at Fairfield Prep (6 Years), and various AAU Programs for 3 years.

Drew came up through the Wakeman Boys and Girls Club Programs and is currently a program director at the club.  To this day he is still very active at Wakeman reffing and coaching various clinics and teams.  Until this year, Drew ran an after school cooking and sports program in Bridgeport at the Burroughs Community Center .

Jay Conway

Jay Conway

Jay attended Christian Brothers Academy a top 20 class A New York State high school basketball team. He was the second leading scorer his junior season. After a back injury his senior season he went on to Worcester Academy for a fifth year as a graduate student. He led Worcester Academy in scoring for that  season.

After his one year stint at Worcester he went on to play college basketball at New   York University .  He was a key player off the bench from game one. Half way through his freshman year he was placed in the starting lineup where he was until he graduated. Jay set an NCAA record for three point shots in a row with 11. Jay's senior year he was named MVP of NYU's basketball team. By the end of his career he accumulated over 1200 points.

Kevin Wielk

Kevin Wielk

Kevin attended and played high school basketball at St. Joe's High School in Trumbull, CT. After his graduation at St. Joe's, Kevin went to attend Nichols College where he played 4 years of basketball. His senior year he was nominated by his to coach to be a captain of the basketball team.

Kevin started his coaching career at Westbrook High School where he worked as the Head JV and Assistant Varsity basketball coach for three seasons. After coaching at Westbrook he moved to Notre Dame of Fairfield High School where he held the same positions for 3 seasons.

Six seasons of coaching high school basketbal gave Kevin an opportunity to become the Head Assistant Coach at Albertus Magnus College in Connecticut. In 2010, the Falcons moved from the bottom of the division to conference champions. They went to the Division 3 NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.

 Kevin has been at Albertus Magnus for 3 seasons and is currently still with the Falcons.

Joseph LaPrad

Joseph LaPrad

Joe grew up in Brunswick, Maine where he was a 3 year letter winner for basketball at Brunswick High School. Over his three years he helped the team to an impressive 64-3 record. He helped his team win the class A state championship during his junior year with a record of 24-0. Joe competed in AAU basketball for 5 years, qualifying for the national tournament in Florida several times.

 

Joe walked onto the basketball team at Juniata College (DIII, Huntingdon, PA) where he played for 2 years while majoring in both Biology and Spanish. After college, Joe moved to Spain for a year to teach English and travel throughout Europe. 

 

His coaching career began back at Brunswick High while helping out with both the JV and Varsity squads. While earning his Masters degree in Secondary Education Joe began helping out with the basketball team at Fairfield Warde. During the 2009-2010 campaign, Joe was an assistant to the freshmen program at Warde and is now the JV coach and first assistant to Ryan Swaller for the Mustangs. Joe is a Biology teacher at Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk.

Jon Herman

Jon Herman

 Coach Herman graduated from Fairfield Prep in 2004. He was a two sport athlete in soccer and basketball.  After high school, he went on to study at Gonzaga University (2008) and recently finished certification coursework and Masters of Arts in Teaching program at Sacred Heart University (2010).

 

Coach Herman is currently the girls varsity basketball assistant at Greens Farms Academy.  Before coaching at GFA, Coach Herman aided in various roles during the off-season for the Fairfield Prep JV and Varsity squads. While at Gonzaga, Coach Herman had the opportunity to play top-tier intramural basketball with such ex-Gonzaga basketball alums like Tony Skinner and Winston Brooks.  He coached the St. Aloysius (Spokane, WA) 8th grade basketball during his college tenure. 

As a resident assistant for two years at Gonzaga, Coach Herman provided leadership and guidance to such players like Matt Bouldin (Iraklis - Greece), Austin Daye (Detroit Pistons), Will Foster (Penafiel - Portugal), Steven Gray (current player), Jeremy Pargo (Maccabi Tel Aviv), and Rob Sacre (current player).  He also lived with Adam Morrison (2x NBA Champion with the LA Lakers) and Derek Raivio (Erie Bayhawks - NBDL) during his time at Gonzaga, gaining much insight about what it takes to be a successful competitor and D-I athlete.

Ryan Purcell

Ryan Purcell

Ryan was a tri varsity athlete at Greenwich High School and Brunswick School. He was elected captain of the Brunswick baseball team his senior year, while earning All-League honors.

Ryan attended Roanoke College following his senior year at Brunswick.  Ryan immediately started coaching youth sports in Greenwich. He has worked with youths aged 12-19, in Football, Basketball and Baseball. He currently teaches 6th grade at New Canaan Country School and coaches their Varsity Basketball team and their JV Baseball squad.

Before New Canaan Country School, Ryan worked at Brunswick where he coached theVarsity Football and Freshman Basketball.

Jason Purzycki

Jason Purzycki

Coach Purzycki is a graduate of Fairfield High School in 1999. He was a three sport athlete, football, basketball and baseball.  After high school he went on to the University of Connecticut and later to Sacred Heart to earn his Masters in Education.

Coach Purzycki is currently both a football coach and basketball coach at Bassick High School in Bridgeport.  Coach Purzycki was the special team’s coordinator and JV coach under former head coach George Loughery in 2006 and is now in charge of the offensive and defensive lines.  Before coming to Bassick, Coach Purzycki was on the Ludlowe Falcons football staff as an assistant on both the varsity and freshman levels for three years, building a new program from scratch at the school.  Coach Purzycki also has head coaching experience in Track and Field, managing the Fairfield Warde boys for two years and freshman baseball for a year.  Coach Purzycki was the JV and varsity assistant girl’s basketball coach at Fairfield Ludlowe for the last 5 seasons.  He just finished his first year as varsity head coach for the Lady Lions of Bassick.  He also has previous experience with girls AAU, coaching two years with the CT Breeze.

Coach Purzycki is a social studies teacher at Bassick teaching civics and serving as the Coordinator for the Government and Human Services Academy, one of four small learning communities for upper classmen at Bassick High School.  Coach Purzycki is also the student council advisor.

John Vitale

John Vitale

John played basketball for four years at Iona Preparatory in New Rochelle, NY playing in the CHSAA league.  He received interest from some division 2 and division 3 schools to play basketball, but decided to focus more on his education and is currently a senior at Fairfield University.  John started his coaching career as a senior in high school coaching at St. John and Paul.  He then went on to coach the Fairfield Prep freshman team as an assistant under Coach Drew Carothers for the past three years.  John also coaches for the Yonkers Knights, an AAU team based out of Westchester, NY.  He has been coaching with the Knights since 2003. This past season he coached his 13U Team to an appearance in the national AAU tournament.

John Dailey

John Dailey

Coach Dailey is a graduate of Fairfield High School in 1999. He played in the Fairfield High Basketball program where he was a two year varsity team member, and a valuable asset his senior year on a team that went 19-5, which included a FCIAC semi-final appearance.

After high school, Dailey attended Endicott College in Massachusetts, where he played one year of basketball at the Division 3 level and three years of golf from 2001-03. Dailey graduated with a Business Management degree. Coach Dailey returned to Endicott form 2005-2007 to pursue a career change from Business to Education and he obtained his teaching license in Physical Education.

Currently, Dailey is a Phys Ed teacher in the Bridgeport Public School system. He also serves as the Head Boys Freshman basketball coach at Fairfield Ludlowe High School. He will be entering his 4th season in the 2010-11 campaign. Coach Dailey is also very active at the Wakeman Boys and Girls Club where he coordinates a charity holiday basketball tournament to raise money for the club, and is a basketball referee in their junior basketball program. An avid golfer, Dailey also coaches the Harding High School golf team in Bridgeport.
